This is a great example of how many boxes can be ticked with even a quite small story project.
Young parents and particularly young mums fight a fair amount of community stereotyping. And this can affect their own levels of achievements. (It’s much harder believing in yourself when you’re the only one doing it!) The young women in this story collection and promotional DVD have had less than ideal starts to their professional and personal lives. They all met as part of a playgroup and went on to accept an invitation to train as mentors in a new Parents and Mentors Program created by Coffs Harbour Family Support Service. The Mentor course is a TAFE accredited program and delivers a Certificate in Mentoring at completion.
The girls recently graduated from that program and now have taken their place as mentors within playgroup and their community. They have all gone on to access opportunities through further education.
UnitingCare Burnside commissioned this project to celebrate their achievements, inspire others to take on the program and also to provide story-based content for the TAFE course, worker training and client induction. The budget was tight and the DVD was an unexpected bonus. Thanks to Jane Hanckel (Inspir=Ed) for her great work with us.
We hope the stories will turn around old prejudices about young mums in our communities.
We looked after all aspects of the project from idea to delivery. Clive designed all the associated products to create a beautiful suite, including the TAFE manual which is now being offered nationally.
