FIRST-PERSON ADVANTAGE PLANNING LAB

The Intelligence You Need Is Already In The Room

Create a clear, strategic approach to gathering and activating the intelligence already sitting inside your organisation — before valuable insights, lived experience, and authentic connection are lost beneath systems, reporting, and organisational language.

The First-Person Advantage Method is designed for nonprofits wanting to strengthen connection, clarity, culture, communications, and strategic direction by opening the circle wider.

You’re in the right place if:

  • Your communications feel polished but disconnected from real human experience
  • You know valuable insights exist across staff, clients, partners, and community — but they’re not being gathered properly
  • You want to move beyond top-down messaging into something more authentic and believable
  • Your organisation is struggling to articulate what makes it different
  • You want stronger engagement, trust, and alignment internally and externally
  • You sense there is untapped intelligence sitting inside the organisation that could improve strategy, communications, partnerships, culture, or growth
  • You’re tired of organisational language that sounds technically correct but emotionally empty

It’s not right for:

  • Organisations wanting generic messaging disconnected from lived experience
  • Traditional branding exercises focused only on appearances
  • Teams unwilling to genuinely listen to the people closest to the work

What if the people around your organisation became one of your greatest strategic assets?

Every person connected to your organisation knows something valuable.

Clients know what works best for them.
Frontline staff notice patterns leadership may never see.
Partners recognise opportunities.
Board members bring insight from the wider world.
Supporters understand why they stay connected.

Too often, organisations operate in silos. Everyone stays in their lane, focused on their own responsibilities, while enormous amounts of intelligence go unexplored.

The First-Person Advantage Method changes that.

It widens the circle.

Instead of the organisation speaking as a single institutional voice, the work becomes informed by the lived experience, language, ideas, and observations of many people.

That’s your First-Person Advantage: the intelligence that comes from the people who know your work best — shared, recognised, and put to work.

“Moya, thank you for your amazing work with us on our origin story and Living My Way’s 30th anniversary souvenir booklet. Those insights have brought new understanding about our Members and our beginnings that will impact our decisions well into the future.”

— Mark Turley, CEO, Living My Way

The people in your circle know more than you’ve had the chance to gather:

  • Founders who remember the energy and ambition that shaped the beginning
  • Staff who notice patterns, gaps and opportunities leadership may never fully see
  • Partners who understand what makes your organisation different
  • Clients whose lived experience reveals what truly matters
  • Supporters and community members who know why they continue showing up

The First-Person Advantage Planning Lab helps you uncover what’s already there — and turn it into practical insight, stronger positioning, clearer direction, and more meaningful engagement before committing to a larger project or campaign.

What you can expect.

The First-Person Advantage Planning Lab is a focused, intensive working session. It’s one and a half hours with Moya to help you uncover the intelligence already sitting inside your organisation and shape a clear, practical direction for how to use it.

We focus on one thing: helping you recognise where your greatest insight, engagement, and strategic opportunities already exist — within the people connected to your work.

“Moya has the best instincts of anyone I’ve ever worked with in this space. She gets up to speed really quickly, has fabulous ideas and always takes me to a new space of possibility.”

— Jennifer Cummins, Executive Director, Heiress Films

Together, we work through:

  • What you want this process to achieve
  • Who holds the intelligence and perspectives you need
  • Where stronger engagement and participation could emerge
  • What stories, language and patterns are already revealing themselves
  • What format, process or next step would best serve your organisation
  • What’s realistic, ethical and worthwhile for your team and capacity

You leave with:

  • The Creative Directions Guide — a clear sense of what’s possible and how to get there.

  • Clear ideas for how this intelligence could support your priorities:  strategy, communications, engagement, growth
  • A session recording for your team to revisit
  • Clear next steps for whether to continue internally, work with support, or expand into a larger project

How the Planning Lab works.

Before the session

Reflect on your organisation, your current challenges, and where you sense untapped insight or opportunity may already exist. Share your responses with Moya before the session so she can bring informed thinking, fresh perspective, and the right questions into the room.

The session — 1.5 hours

Together, we explore the intelligence sitting within your organisation and wider network. We identify where stronger engagement, clearer positioning, richer stories, or strategic opportunities may be waiting — and shape a practical approach for how to gather and use them.

After

You leave with greater clarity, practical direction, and best-practice guidance for next steps: whether you continue internally, work with strategic support, or expand into a larger First-Person Advantage project.

The First-Person Advantage Planning Lab gives you a clearer understanding of the value already sitting inside your organisation.

From there, organisations choose one of three paths:

Do It Yourself

Some organisations take the ideas, frameworks, and guidance from the Planning Lab and lead their own stakeholder gathering and insight process internally.

Common Questions

How is the First-Person Advantage Planning Lab different from a branding workshop?

This isn’t traditional branding or messaging work.

The Planning Lab focuses on uncovering the intelligence, language, stories and insight already sitting within your organisation and wider network — and identifying how that can support strategy, positioning, engagement and future direction.

Do we need to know exactly what we want before booking?

Not at all.

Many organisations come to the Planning Lab because they know there’s untapped value or opportunity, but they’re not yet clear on the best way to approach it.

The session is designed to help create that clarity.

What kinds of organisations benefit most from this?

The process works particularly well for nonprofits, charities, member organisations, advocacy groups, social enterprises and purpose-led teams.

Especially during periods of growth, change, repositioning, anniversaries, leadership transitions or strategic review.

Is this just storytelling?

No. Storytelling is one possible outcome.

The deeper value is organisational intelligence — recognising patterns, strengths, lived experience, language, values and opportunities that can shape decisions, communications and growth.

Can we implement the work ourselves afterwards?

Yes. Some organisations continue internally using the ideas and frameworks developed in the Planning Lab. Others prefer ongoing support or facilitation from Moya and Only Human Stories.

What’s the time commitment for our team?

The Planning Lab itself is a 1.5-hour intensive session, plus some brief preparation beforehand.

From there, next steps depend on the size and scope of the opportunity you choose to pursue.

Why this work is important

I’m Moya Sayer-Jones. I work with nonprofits and purpose-led organisations, helping them stand out using the real voices, experiences, ideas and intelligence of the people they work with and for.

For more than twenty years, I’ve specialised in milestone moments, origin story work, leadership transitions, repositioning, and helping organisations rediscover what makes them fundamentally different.

Again and again, I’ve seen the same thing: The most valuable insight is usually already there.

It exists inside lived experience, conversations not yet had, patterns not yet recognised, and stories organisations haven’t yet stopped to gather properly.

The First-Person Advantage Planning Lab is designed to help organisations uncover that value before investing significant time, money or energy into the wrong approach.

Because when people genuinely recognise themselves in the work, something shifts.

The organisation stops sounding like an institution talking at people and starts becoming a collective voice people want to contribute to, support and stand beside.
